Class Guidelines & Etiquette

What To Bring

Please bring a yoga mat (though we do have several complimentary mats if you forget), a personal towel for sweat, and water.

If you sweat a lot, please bring extra towels. Use dry towels to cover props if you are sweating, and place your mat on top of blankets during inversions.

We want you to sweat—just please take it with you.

Before Class

  • Yoga is practiced with bare feet, a not-full stomach and non-restrictive clothes suitable for stretching.
  • Train yourself to drink water during the day to be well hydrated, rather than drinking just before or during class.

yoga class courtesies

  • Please arrive on time and stay for the whole class.  If you do not have a current pass and/or account, arrive at least 15 minutes early to get squared up. Please be respectful of the teacher's time as well as the rest of the class. The teacher needs to start class on time, so please take care of your business well before class start time.
  • Reduce stress before class and avoid traffic in the lobby:  Create your Mindbody account and purchase your pass prior to class.
  • Turn off all cell phone sounds; out of respect for other students no use of phones is allowed during class.
  • All classes include 10 - 15 minutes of relaxation and meditation at the end.
  • Please do not enter or leave the room during the chants, during an asana, or especially during savasana and meditation. You may do so between poses; do your best not to disturb the energy in the room at any time. Practice stillness between poses.
  • It is your responsibility to inform the teacher of pregnancy, any injuries or other medical issues, and to consult with your physician prior to attending yoga, if warranted.
  • Please do not use any cologne, perfume or other scents. Some people are allergic and sensitive to fragrances, which are increased in a heated room.
  • Please wash your feet before class if needed. Have a clean mat and towels to help us keep the rooms clean.  We generally have washcloths available for sweat during class and sanitizing mats after class; please only use the studio cloths for small jobs, and place soiled cloths in the basket by the front door on your way out.
  • If you are actively ill and potentially infectious (coughing, sneezing, recent fever/malaise/vomiting, etc.) for the safety and well-being of your yoga community, please do not come into the studio.  We are happy to extend your pass a few days by request for unexpected illness.  Rest, and consider attending a Live Stream class instead! We have disinfectant spray and wipes available in the studio for anyone who wishes to disinfect their props before or after use.
  • For best results and progress, practice yoga 3 to 5 times a week regularly.

Studio Invocations

Studies have shown that when a person chants it can stabilize the heart rate, lower blood pressure, produce beneficial endorphins in the body, and boost metabolic processes. It perfectly complements the physical practice of asana.

In the yogic tradition, we open and close each class with the following Sanskrit chants:

HATHA YOGA CHANTS

Opening chant:

Om, Asato Maa Sadgamaya,
Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya,
Mrityor Maa Amrtam Gamaya,
Om Shantih Shantih Shantih.

O Lord please lead me from the unreal to the real. Lead me from darkness to light. Lead me from death to immortality. May there be peace, peace and perfect peace.

Closing chant:

Om, Lokasamasta Sukhinobhavantu
Om Shantih Shantih Shantih.

May all beings everywhere attain happiness and freedom. May there be peace, peace and perfect peace.

ASHTANGA YOGA CHANTS

Opening chant

Om
Vande Gurunam Charanaravinde
Sandarshita Svatma Sukava Bodhe
Nih Sreyase Jangalikayamane
Samsara Halahala Mohashantyai

Abahu Purushakaram
Shankhacakrsi Dharinam
Sahasra Sirasam Svetam
Pranamami Patanjalim
Om

I bow to the lotus feet of the Supreme Guru
which awaken insight into the happiness of pure Being,
which are the refuge, the jungle physician,
which eliminate the delusion caused by the poisonous herb of Samsara (conditioned existence).

I prostrate before the sage Patanjali
who has thousands of radiant, white heads (as the divine serpent, Ananta)
and who has, as far as his arms, assumed the form of a man
holding a conch shell (divine sound), a wheel (discus of light or infinite time) and a sword (discrimination).

Closing chant

Om
Svasthi Praja Bhyaha Pari Pala Yantam
Nya Yena Margena Mahim Mahishaha
Go Brahmanebhyaha Shubamastu Nityam
Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi

May the rulers of the earth keep to the path of virtue
For protecting the welfare of all generations.
May the religious, and all peoples be forever blessed,
May all beings everywhere be happy and free
Om peace, peace, perfect peace

Helping Each Other

"We come to practice yoga asana together for many reasons; one is group energy.

We all have ups and downs physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally.

Let us help each other with good, positive healing energy,

no matter what the circumstances. "

~ Rached Maalouf
